English Editor (native speaker)

Title: English Editor

Job Description:

  • Review, proofread and edit English documents and legal memoranda. These documents will be Microsoft Office formats, primarily Powerpoint, followed by Word, with a few Excel sheets. The scope of these reports can be anything from a simple translation check, to a full-blown report about the intricacies of the IP situation in China. The legalities mainly come from the translation of Chinese into English, not the correction of specific legal terminology.
  • There are many financial terms used in the reports in the company so a background in finance, or a degree in this area, would be extremely beneficial.
  • The editing of the English language reports, which are produced by Chinese analysts, is to ensure that any dialectic, or politically incorrect nuances are removed, and that the English flows in a solid and readable manner.
  • You will also have to be able to coach staff in their English report writing. This could be as simple as correcting a definite problem that an analyst has, to undertaking a training session to improve a long-list of common errors.
  • Further to the above training you will be asked to undertake the English training programmes that are readily available. This does not necessitate you having previously taught English in China, but is included in the JD to ensure that you are made aware that this is a part of the position.
  • Examine documents for proper Company formatting, available from a long list of previously determined and commonly used (in the company) templates.
  • Create and maintain a check-list to eliminate "Common English Language Mistakes". These could be corrected in formal training sessions, or via a weekly newsletter, or if it is apparent by directly conversing with the individual who has a specific English problem.
  • All of the above are common areas for editors in China, but it is your own responsibility to converse with staff to ascertain any problems they have. You can do this through many avenues: the in-house messenger system, phone, but the most effective is face-to-face. This is a primarily a people persons' position, so you will not be in seclusion as is the norm for an editor.
